Jamieson takes heptathlon gold
Jamieson recovered after losing the lead in the long jump
Australia's Jane Jamieson held off a challenge from team-mate Kylie Wheeler to win gold in the heptathlon in Manchester. Jamieson finished the seven disciplines with a personal best of 6,059 points, 97 clear of Wheeler. Ghana's Margaret Simpson was second going into the final event - the 800m - but had to settle for bronze. Wheeler briefly threatened to take gold after winning the long jump. But Jamieson seized back the initiative in the javelin with a winning throw of 48.01 metres. England's Kelly Sotherton saw her medal hopes shattered as she finished last in the javelin with a throw of 27.69m. |
