Talel smashes 10,000m record
Wilberforce Tafel just wins the 10,000m
Talel triumphed in an astonishing finish

Wilberforce Talel broke a 28-year-old Commonwealth Games record to take gold in a thrilling 10,000m.

The Kenyan held off an inspired late charge by countryman Paul Kosgei to win in a time of 27m45.39s. Kosgei was just 0.07s back in second.

The 22-year-old Talel, who took silver in the World Cross Country Championships, turned into the final straight in touch with Kosgei, John Yuda and John Cheruiyot.

But his superior finish was enough to break Kiwi Richard Tayler's previous Games best.

Kosgei had to settle for bronze while Yuda, from Tanzania, halted a Kenyan one-two-three.

Talel delight

Cheruiyot was the next highest Kenyan finisher, stumbling over the line at the finish.

Talel said: "I am delighted with my first major title.

"Especially because I won the race on the last lap. I knew I had the potential but I was worried about my speed in the last 400m.

"Kosgei made me fight hard which made it a fantastic race. Yuda proved that you can never ignore him, he spoiled our hopes of getting all three medals."

Rob Denmark was the highest-placed English athlete in 12th place.
