Blackwood takes 400m crown
Blackwood (left) took gold as Caines was edged into fourth
Jamaica's Michael Blackwood edged out Canada's Shane Niemi to take gold in a thrilling finish to the 400m final. Blackwood was given the victory by 0.02 seconds from Niemi with world champion Avard Moncur pipping England's Daniel Caines to bronze in a photo finish. Alleyne Francique of Grenada led off the final bend but tied up as his rivals finished strongly, with Blackwood crossing the line in 45.07secs.
Niemi held on to take silver and Bahamian Moncur came from well back to force his way into the medals. Francique was fifth ahead of Eric Milazar of Mauritius, Chris Brown of the Bahamas and Australia's Clinton Hill. A disappointed Caines said: "Life goes on. I gave it my best shot but it wasn't good enough. "I will learn from it and I will come back - hopefully stronger. "I dipped and I thought maybe I'd got it but obviously not." |
