In a dramatic climax to the Formula One drivers championship, Hill finished second to his great rival Michael Schumacher. The collision during the Australian Grand Prix handed the German his first title - but the British public stayed behind Hill.

JONATHAN EDWARDS

Edwards raised the British public's awareness of triple jump to a new level in 1995. He won the European Cup and the World Championship with two world record leaps of more than 18m. He went on to claim Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000.

After almost 60 years Rusedski was the first British man to reach a Grand Slam singles final in the 1997 US Open Championship. His defeat by Pat Rafter did nothing to diminish the efforts of the Canadian-born tennis player in the eyes of BBC viewers.
