After Europe's Ryder Cup team had triumphed in America two years previously, Faldo won the first of his US Masters titles in 1989. He became one of only two golfers to win the Sports Personality of the Year and has so far won six Majors.

Gascoigne, the most gifted and unpredictable English footballer of his generation, was the inspiration behind England reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1990. His tears in Turin sparked "Gazza-mania" and ensured his place in football folklore.

McColgan was Britain's most successful women's middle distance runner of the era. Within just a few months of giving birth to her first child in 1990, the Scot was crowned the world 10,000m champion in Tokyo.

In 1993 Christie took the 100m gold at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. The year before he had become the oldest man ever to win Olympic sprint gold and he remains one of Britain's most famous track and field stars of all time.
