A schoolgirl 800m champion, Kelly Holmes turned her back on a full-time athletics career to become a physical education instructor in the army.

She rose to the rank of sergeant before deciding to re-enter athletics in 1992.

Splitting her career in the army and a role as a British International athlete, she won the AAA 800m title in 1993.
