1965: Tommy Simpson

Possibly the best cyclist Britain has ever produced, Simpson paid the ultimate price for his sport.

In 1967, he died of exhaustion in the middle of the most gruelling of sporting events, the Tour de France.

The first Englishman to break into professional continental racing, 'Mr Tom', as he was known, is still revered today.
