Calcavecchia is in many ways the forgotten man of world golf.

He was at his peak during the late 1980s and early 1990s when he won The Open at Royal Troon, defeating Wayne Grady and Greg Norman at the first play-off hole.

He has also competed at three Ryder Cups and was on the losing side in 1987 and 1989 before a valuable half against Colin Montgomerie in 1991 helped the United States to victory.

During 2002, the 42-year-old achieved a number of well-placed finishes, including a runner-up spot at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic and seventh at the USPGA.
