French star Amelie Mauresmo's decline in fortunes continued with a 6-3 6-4 defeat by Spain's Carla Suarez-Navarro in the second round of the French Open.
The former Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, 28, recently talked of retirement and fell desperately short against the qualifier.
Third seed Jelena Jankovic, fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and eighth seed Venus Williams all made progress.
But sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze was beaten by Estonia's Kaia Kanepi.
And world number one Maria Sharapova will have to wait to finish her match against Bethanie Mattek after darkness stopped play.
Bad weather earlier in the day meant the top seed's match with the American started late on Thursday night.

The match will resume on Friday and is scheduled as second on centre court.
Rain stopped play for 90 minutes early in the afternoon but by then Mauresmo was already out of the tournament.
The French star, who missed both the Italian and German Opens because of a rib injury, made 38 unforced errors and was broken five times.
She has never been past the quarter-finals of her home Grand Slam.
"Frankly, I don't know what to say right now because there was nothing much on my side, apart from a few games in which I was slightly more aggressive and not letting her play that game that much," she said.
"It's a bit difficult for me to analyse all this. And all I can say is that I feel sorry about the way I played."
Jankovic suffered an injury scare as she saw off New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-2 7-6 (7-5).
The Serbian ran away with the first set but struggled to wrap up her victory after needing treatment on her arm.
Jankovic will next play Slovakian 28th seed Dominika Cibulkova - who saw off Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-3 6-0 - for a place in the last 16.
After winning the Italian Open in the build-up to Roland Garros, Jankovic is one of the favourites for the title.
She reached the semi-finals in 2007 but Croatia-born Erakovic, making her debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam at the age of 20, pushed her all the way.
Erakovic served for the second set at 6-5 and also led 5-3 in the tie-break before Jankovic recovered to win four straight points and clinch victory.

"It happened I think somewhere in the beginning of the second set and gradually was getting worse and worse," said the Jankovic.
"And so from hitting a lot of balls, my arm got very, at first, tight, and I started to have pain in my arm.
"It's swollen now at the moment, and it got swollen in the match. I received treatment from the trainer, and she helped me to finish the match, and I'm glad about that."
Eighth seed Williams swept into the third round with a dominant 6-2 6-4 victory over Tunisia's Selima Sfar, featuring plenty of net play from the American.
"I should always have been there (at the net) years ago, but now I just like it and I'm just there and I feel good there," she said.
Sfar, a 30-year-old qualifier ranked 241st in the world, briefly rallied midway through the second set but Williams' progress was never in doubt despite 25 unforced errors.
Next up for Williams is a tie with 26th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who beat Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3-6 6-1 6-1.
Kuznetsova made short work of America's Vania King, triumphing 6-4 6-2, but Chakvetadze is out after losing 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to Kanepi.
Seventh seed Elena Dementieva of Russia beat Marta Domachowska 6-1 6-4, and teenage French hope Alize Cornet saw off Gisela Dulko 6-0 4-6 6-4.
