McEnroe wants Davis Cup changes

John McEnroe John McEnroe has said it is "a complete joke" that Davis Cup organisers have failed to prevent the withdrawal of high-profile players.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal opted out of their country's ties, while Andy Murray missed Great Britain's trip to Argentina with an injury problem.

McEnroe told the BBC that the format of the tournament needs to be revised and players' attitudes also need to change.

"Players simply look at it like they can get away with it now," he said.

"They're not going to be criticised that much for doing it.

"I think the Davis Cup leads itself to these types of problems because their format requires so much commitment"

"They go play events where they get obscene amounts of money and claim that the Davis Cup doesn't fit into their schedule.

"Maybe Murray has taken some heat for a week or so, but it'll go away. It's sad that it's come to this."

McEnroe, speaking at the BlackRock Tour of Champions event in Belfast, said much of the blame should lie with the tennis authorities for failing to move with the times.

"The fact the people who run the Davis Cup haven't made a change already is a complete joke, it's unbelievable," he said.

"You look at the top players and you're lucky if half of them play now."
