Federer beats Sampras in game two

Federer and Sampras Roger Federer defeated Pete Sampras for the second time in three days, taking their exhibition match 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) in Kuala Lumpur.

Both men held serve to take the first set to a tie-break with world number one Federer inching ahead when Sampras hit a forehand into the net.

Sampras, who retired in 2002, brought the tie-break back on serve but Federer clinched it with a backhand volley.

The second set also went to a tie-break before Federer sealed victory.

"He serves it to the line, he serves harder than me"

The match, the second of three in an exhibition series across Asia, was part of Malaysia's 50th anniversary celebrations of independence from Britain.

The pair meet again Macau on Saturday.

"I had a taste of what the best is and I think Roger has that extra gear," said Sampras, 36.

"He has good volleys and he has this little backhand flick that honestly, I have never seen before... it's something that I didn't have."

Federer was equally full of praise for Sampras, saying he had lost little from his trademark serve.

"I am really, really impressed by the way he's been playing," said the Swiss.

"He's got the most incredible serve, you know. I can't read it, he serves it to the line, he serves harder than me."

The first game of the series came in Seoul on Tuesday, when Federer won 6-4 6-3 in 61 minutes.

Sampras, 36, broke serve first and led 4-2 before Federer found his rhythm to win 10 of the last 13 games.

How significant is Federer's victory over Sampras?

The two men met only once in competition, with the Swiss winning a five-set thriller in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2001.

Federer won his 12th Grand Slam title at the US Open in September and is closing in on Sampras's record of 14.
