Injured Mauresmo to miss US Open

Amelie Mauresmo Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo has pulled out of the US Open to fully recover from a groin problem.

The injury has prevented the French star from playing any competitive tennis since the Fed Cup in July.

"I need to take the necessary time to rediscover my desire and to be able to be at my best level for when I return," Mauresmo told her website.

The 28-year-old, who is currently ranked seven in the world, reached the semi-finals at last year's US Open.

"I have still not resumed playing in training and under such conditions, taking part in the US Open with a chance of winning is not possible," said Mauresmo.

Mauresmo said that she hoped to return for the China Open, which begins on 17 September.

The two-time Grand Slam winner has had a difficult 2007, having endured a two-month lay-off with appendicitis earlier in the year.

She has not played a regular tournament since Wimbledon, where her title defence ended with a fourth-round defeat by Czech Nicole Vaidisova.
