Nadal fights back to beat Youzhny

BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal Second seed Rafael Nadal continued his exhausting Wimbledon experience with a dramatic comeback against Mikhail Youzhny in round four on Thursday.

Nadal was on Court Two 24 hours after his five-day epic with Robin Soderling, and it looked a match too far when he dropped the first two sets.

But the Spaniard battled back to win 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 and set up a quarter-final with Tomas Berdych.

There were also fourth-round wins for Novak Djokovic and Marcos Baghdatis.

Tenth seed Baghdatis will face fourth seed Djokovic, who beat Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (10-8) 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 7-6 (7-5), in the quarter-finals.

Youzhny struggled with a long-standing back injury but, even so, Nadal was delighted with the way he fought back.

"I thought I might be going home today," said the world number two. "Youhnzy was playing very good.

"I'm not feeling I'm playing my best - I played a little bit defensive. His game is very good, he played flat and fast. It was tough after the first two sets but I probably played my best match on grass in my life in the next three sets.

"For me it was an important victory today as Youzhny is a very good player as I've lost to him the last two times - I won to him on clay but that's different.

"I'm especially happy for my game. The last three sets I never played like this on grass."

Youzhny said: "I pulled out of Halle in the second round to be ready for Wimbledon. When I play a lot I start to feel pain.

"It was tough to feel the ball so I just fought through it"
Marcos Baghdatis

"The injury hasn't been too bad here because of the rain delays. Today I was waiting for the rain but it didn't come. Three hours is nothing for Nadal. He'll be ready for tomorrow for sure."

Djokovic needed three hours and 12 minutes to see off Hewitt on Court one, with the Serb holding the edge in all three tie-breaks and saving set points in the first.

"Hewitt is on of the most difficult players to play against on this surface," said Djokovic. "This win means a lot for me, it's probably the most valuable win I had on this surface."

Hewitt said: "He served well, especially on the big points. I played patchy, I could have played better, but it was three tie-breaks.

"I won more games out there, broke serve more times, I just didn't have a lot of luck out there today."

On a raucous Court 13, Baghdatis gave the crowd plenty to cheer with a straight-sets win over Nikolay Davydenko.

A large Cypriot contingent cheered the 10th seed's every move as he saw off the Russian sixth seed 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to reach the last eight.

Asked afterwards about his fans, Baghdatis said: ""For sure it helps you, motivates you, and gives you some energy."

He added: "Conditions were tough, it was windy and we both didn't play very well or serve very good. It was tough to feel the ball so I just fought through it.

"He's moving pretty good, gets all the balls back, but I just tried to fight and get the ball more times than him in the court, and that's why I won."

Czech 14th seed Berdych beat Jonas Bjorkman 6-4 6-0 6-7 (6-8) 6-0.

"So far everything is good," said Berdych. "I won the (warm-up) tournament in Halle and I think the grass is an advantage for me."
