Andy Murray overcame an injury scare to beat Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-3 in the first round of the Nottingham Open.
The British wildcard won the first set after needing five minutes of treatment to his right ankle after slipping over.
He limped occasionally in the next set but sealed a fine victory over the fifth seed on his second match point.
In other matches, Alex Bogdanovic lost 4-6 7-6 6-3 to Max Mirnyi while defending champion Richard Gasquet saw off Ivan Navarro Pastor 6-3 3-6 7-5.
Murray is searching for form ahead of Wimbledon after losing in the first round of the Stella Artois Championships last week.
The 19-year-old had won only three of his last 12 matches before the event.
But he struggled with the condition of the court, which top seed Thomas Johansson had described as dangerous following his first-round defeat to Jan Vacek.
During the final game of the set, Murray went over on his ankle as he attempted to make an awkward lob backhand.
He limped back to his chair and had the treatment before returning to action and coming back from advantage down to take the set.
The world number 45 was still feeling the injury in the second set but looked too strong for his opponent and claimed the win with an overturned line call.
"This tournament is important but is not the same as playing at Wimbledon so I'll take stock in the morning"
Murray said he will decide on Wednesday whether he will carry on in the tournament, with Wimbledon starting next Monday.
"I slipped and felt my Achilles tendon jar," he said. "You can tell 20 to 30 seconds after if it's bad because the pain is pretty sharp but I felt I could probably carry on and right now it just feels like it is bruised.
"Obviously this tournament is still important, but it's not the same as playing at Wimbledon so I'll take stock in the morning.
"I will speak to the trainer again and I will phone my physio Jean-Pierre Bruyere and ask him what I should do."
