Q&A: Marcelo Rios

Marcelo Rios

Former world number one Marcelo Rios has taken time out from the Merrill Lynch Tour of Champions in Graz to answer your questions.

The Chilean won his third consecutive title on the tour last week in the Algarve, beating John McEnroe in the final.

It made him the first player to qualify for the season-ending BlackRock Masters at the Royal Albert Hall in London, from 5-10 December.

This week he is in Graz for the Tennis Masters to take on McEnroe, Thomas Muster and Goran Ivanisevic.

Rios was the number one player in the world in 1998 after reaching the final of the Australian Open and winning big titles in Indian Wells, Miami and Rome.

He is known for being one of the most talented left-handed players of the last two decades.

He also enjoyed a hero's welcome in Chile after becoming the first ever Chilean player to be world number one, but his relationship with the world's media was rarely a happy one.

Many thanks for all your questions - Marcelo answered the best of them below.

How did you pick up tennis in a nation and continent obsessed with football?
Devasheesh Mathur, India

Well, it was tough because when I started to play there were no tennis players. It was a sport no one used to play so it was pretty tough.

Marcelo, Which of the four Grand Slams did you most enjoy playing in and why?
Kev Foster, UK

I liked French Open a lot since it's on clay and I grew up playing on clay. All of the Grand Slams were pretty nice though. But don't ask me for the one I hated because the one I hated was Wimbledon.

Why did you retire so suddenly from the professional circuit?
Anthony Horvatovic, UK

My back was troubling me a lot and I had a lot of back surgery. That was one of the reasons for retiring. I would love to play professionally but I'm not fit enough to do it.

What do you miss most about life on the tour? And what do you miss least?
Vicki Blackburn, England

Nothing really. I only missed playing the game. The thing I miss least is practising every day. I was really sick of practising and travelling and doing all the stuff you have to do to be a professional player.

I was a big fan of your tennis during your pro years. I just wanted to ask if you have any regrets about your tennis career?
P Sundaralingham, England

I have no regrets. I'm pretty happy with what I did but obviously I would have loved to have won a Grand Slam.

Who was your toughest opponent?
S.B., England

I think the baseline players were the toughest to play. All the Spanish guys were tough but I can't single out one particular player.

Do you think that Fernando Gonzalez could go on and win a Grand Slam at some stage in his career?
Daniel Bissett, Wales

Oh, it looks pretty tough. But he is a great player and if he is confident enough over two weeks he could do it. I certainly hope he can do it.

Can you name any up and coming new players from Chile who we can expect to see on the ATP tour in the next few years?
Mr Hitul Mistry, England

Nobody. After Gonzalez and Massu there is really nobody at the moment.

A lot of players have mentioned how fantastic playing at the Royal Albert Hall is. Is this a venue you are looking forward to playing at?
Katie Andersson, England

I've never had the opportunity to play at the BlackRock Masters and I don't know the venue. But the other players have told me that it's a great tournament and a great place to play tennis so I'm looking forward to playing there. Being back in tennis on this tour has been nice - I didn't know how competitive it would be but everyone wants to win.

What are your thoughts on the career of Andre Agassi who retires at the US Open later this month. Would you be happy to play against him on the Merrill Lynch Tour of Champions one day?
Mark Witchell, United Kingdom

I would love to play him. It would be really nice if he would join the Merrill Lynch Tour of Champions. I don't think he will do that for a while though but it would be nice.

People compare your style of play to Rafael Nadal's. How do you compare yourself to him?
Mano, Canada

We both play double-handed backhand and I think we are both pretty fast around the court. But we have also different styles of playing the game.

Greatest of all time: Sampras or Federer?
Eileen, Scotland

Federer by far. At the time when I was retiring from the ATP circuit he was only playing serve and volley. He didn't play that well from the baseline back then. Now he just won Wimbledon from the baseline and that shows that he is a really complete player.

Ilie Nastase was very critical of your behaviour off the court during your career, and you didn't have a very good relationship with the media. Why did you behave the way you did? Did the world have the wrong impression of you?
Jonathan, England

I don't care what Nastase said. I don't even know him and I couldn't care less about what he said. I have good and bad relations with different people like everyone. That's the way people are. I was never fake with anybody.

Hi, I've followed your career for many years, and went to my first seniors event in Portugal specifically to see you play. It was wonderful to see you back on court and you seemed to be enjoying yourself. I would like to know if you feel less pressure at the senior events?
Jena, Wales

For sure there is less pressure and the atmosphere is more relaxed on the Merrill Lynch Tour of Champions. Life is more relaxed and we definitely try to put on a good show for the crowd. But I think everyone still wants to win. I didn't really know how to approach this in the beginning but I realised when everyone steps on court they try to win. It's been a great time and nice experience and I will try to enjoy it as much as I can.

Is there any way you could ever play any ATP main tour event?
Jena, Wales

I don't think it's very likely that I will return to the ATP circuit. To have an ATP ranking you have to play all year and I'm not fit enough for that so I don't think I will make it.

Do you still have to carry out special exercises to take care of your back problem?
Jena, Wales

I'm sick of doing the exercises so I'm not doing them anymore. During a couple of years I was doing a lot of exercises getting my back fit but I'm done with that.

What kept you from winning a Grand Slam?
David Eisenbud, USA

I think it was pretty tough to focus for two weeks. It was too long a tournament and I also think I maybe had a little bit of bad luck. There were better players than me back then as well.

What do you think of the young guns at the moment- Berdych, Monfils, Gasguet, and what do you think of Andy Murray?
Shane Roche, UK

I don't know the youngsters that much. I know them by name but I haven't been following the ATP circuit that closely lately. But from what I hear they are pretty good and hopefully more young guys will come up.

I think Federer is the best player though and he is going to be the best player ever and hopefully he will.

I saw Murray play Massu at Wimbledon but I don't know him that much. Was I impressed by his game? No.
