Paul-Henri Mathieu led France to a 3-2 victory over Sweden, surviving a tense four-setter against Thomas Johansson.
Mathieu won 6-1 6-4 6-7 6-4 to spring a minor upset.
Meanwhile, Marat Safin won an epic five-set battle to take Russia through at the expense of Chile.
