Safin makes shock exit

Marat Safin

Marat Safin's poor record at Wimbledon continued as he suffered a 4-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-1) defeat to tournament novice and fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

Safin, seeded 19, claimed the opening set but thereafter struggled for form as Tursunov found his range on the unfamiliar grass surface.

Tursunov showed the greater desire to take the second and third sets.

And although Safin attempted to fight back, 21-year-old Tursunov was not to be denied his spot in the second round.

"I give up on Wimbledon," said Safin afterwards. "It's definitely not the tournament for me.

" Being out of the limelight here is perfect for me and I firmly believe I have what it takes to win the title "
2003 runner-up Mark Philippoussis

"I give up on practising before the tournament. I just come Friday, Saturday before, practice a couple of days, then play.

"I'm not going to waste my time knowing that I will not play well."

The 2003 runner-up Mark Philippoussis made an impressive start to this year's campaign with a hard-hitting 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over Christophe Rochus.

The Australian's normally reliable serve was a bit awry in the first set as he produced seven double faults but he broke in the sixth game to win it.

He never looked back after that and wrapped up his first win since the Australian Open in 91 minutes.

Rochus followed brother Olivier out of the tournament after he lost on Monday.

Philippoussis refused to consider a possible fourth-round clash with Tim Henman.

"I take things one match at a time and never look at the draw - I don't even want to know who I may play," he said.

The Australian was satisfied with his display and added: "It was a good first match and I was happy with my serve, which I didn't drop once.

"Being out of the limelight here is perfect for me and I firmly believe I have what it takes to win the title."
