Do you agree?
With a 75-year history, the Ryder Cup is one of the oldest and most keenly-anticipated events in the sporting calendar.
For sheer excitement and passion, edge-of-the seat tension and inspirational team spirit, this year's tournament had it all.
The unfolding drama gripped golfing fans from both sides of the Atlantic, as they willed their team on, with the Europeans emerging victorious.
But fans of other sports would be quick to claim that it is football's World Cup, cycling's Tour de France, the Ashes, or perhaps the Grand National, that is truly the best event in the world of sport.
Which would get your vote?
Why do so many people like the Olympics? Ice-skating and synchronised swimming are not sports! In fact, if it has to judged, is it is no sport! Sport should be won or lost on how many balls cross a line, over a net or even through a hoop. I genuinely think that after the athletics and football no-one is watching it!
Matthew T, England
Golf? Not really a sport as such, is it? More a pastime. Like chess or darts or snooker. A nice hobby. For old and tired people. So don't mix it up with serious sport now, will you?
David,
Belgium
The best trophy in sports is clearly ice hockey's Stanley Cup. It is professional sport's most difficult trophy to win and it conveys the history, strength and challenges specific to the sport of hockey with simplicity and class.
K. Gunderson, Canada
As many others have already said, it really does depend on what you've been brought up with. I like football because I grew up with it in England, more Canadians will no doubt prefer ice hockey, Americans might say baseball, Indians - cricket etc. But I would have to say the greatest sport event is the only one that brings all the nations together to compete in virtually anything they're good at. So it has to be the Summer/Winter Olympics.
Following that you`d really have to say the Fifa World Cup for the global audience it attracts. Whatever your favourite sport is, there can be no better honour than to represent your country in something you love doing. So when drinking beer becomes an Olympic sport, I'll be ready!
Ged Ashton, Japan
What makes the Ryder Cup special is that it is played by highly paid professionals for no financial gain (even if Tiger Woods would have it differently). There are very few sports or competitions these days that do not see the competitors gain some kind of financial reward.
To see the emotional outpouring on Sunday afternoon (of both sides) suggests that this competition is unlike any other. Long may it continue.

The Ryder Cup is not as good as All-Ireland final day in Croke Park, Dublin. There were more people at this final than was at this year's World Cup final and it's probably the only sport where passionate fans can shout and sit beside one another, you have to see it to believe it. Unique!
Conor O'Neill, Ireland
Comparing a golf event with a multi-sport event like the Olympics is absurd. It's like comparing a single bar of chocolate with a box of chocolates. Surely what matters most is the intensity, skill, exhilaration and joy we witness in an epic struggle when sportsmen and sportswomen excel and exceed all expectations of them. Those are the moments which spectators remember and cherish for years. Those are the moments when sportsmen and sportswomen become heroes.
Mehboob, England
Anyone who says the Tour de France is the most exiting sporting event is ludicrous. The Ryder Cup is by far the best.
Rob McLaren,

I am proud to say I was there, front seat on the eighteenth hole, and I witnessed true sporting history. The buzz it gave me was unreal when McGinlay sunk his ten footer, every body around that eighteenth hole knows the buzz I'm talking about.
Seeing Jasper Carrott, Kenny Dalglish and Ian Botham all erupt it was a true moment to remember. And when Westwood and Garcia did their lap of honour, fantastic! Truly one of the greatest sporting events in the world.
Stephen Doades,
England
The Ryder Cup is golf's most exciting tournament, but it would be hard to say it is the best overall. The All-Ireland hurling and football championship, and soccer's World Cup, would all have to contend with the best of the rest.
Martin Kelly, Ireland
I would definitely say that the best sporting events are those where players are playing for the honour of holding a particular cup or title. I suppose everybody has forgotten that some years ago the Ryder Cup boys had some problems with the fact that they were not getting paid for playing in the event.
Although I enjoyed the result last weekend, for me, it has tarnished the event. My top three are:
1. The Olympic Games
2. Volvo Ocean Race
3. Cricket World Cup

No sport has a better trophy to win than hockey's Stanley Cup. After four rounds of the fiercest competition sport has to offer, you get to skate around pressing the cup and drink champagne from it.

Apples must be compared with apples and oranges with oranges...it is all in the eye of the beholder!
J Kriegler, Canada
Certainly the Ryder Cup was a fantastic event. The triumph of team play over individualists. Most people are opting for the larger events, World Cup and Olympics. While I love them, I find them distasteful because they are so bureaucratic.
Remember the US World Cup, when players were carded for not having their socks up, things like that - and the last one where the referees were chosen by some obscure committee. The Olympics are the same. For the most excitement give me the EPL every time!
Michael J Sullivan, Canada
Well, what can I say? Everyone has an opinion, and each is correct in its own way. I think that in this day and age with such diversity in sporting fields we all like to think that our sport is the greatest. But one must remember, as someone great once said: "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and it goes with sports as well.
Just a couple of sporting events which have not got a mention as yet... Snooker World Championship, Rugby Union World Cup, Cricket World Cup, Hockey World Cup and Wimbledon, to name just a few. Each sport is the greatest, in its own right.

For me, the Ryder Cup has the most sustained drama, with excitement building up in intensity over several hours and ultimately to an almost unbearable conclusion. The drama is highly unpredictable, with the practically unique feature of running several different pieces of action simultaneously - so the combined score can change so fast, reverse, and then change all over again.
But its uniqueness is its appeal. Don't take away my penalty shootouts, Lions matches, 100m races, Americas cup deciders, one-day finals, or the Grand National. Their own unique qualities and appeal help to highlight the ones special to the Ryder Cup.

My choices:
1. Fifa World Cup
2. Olympics
3. SuperBowl
4. Wimbledon Tennis
5. NBA Finals

Before the Ryder Cup at the Belfry I would have questioned anyone's logic in assuming it bigger than some of the huge championships in the world. However, after biting my nails well and truly off over three days of brilliant competition, I must say that my mind is changed.
When that winning putt sank I was leaping around like a madman. I can't remember ever doing that when watching even the Olympics!! The Ryder Cup is indeed special.
Antony Calvert,

The Ryder Cup is definitely the biggest event if you are European or American. The sport is played in such an encouraging manner -it has plenty of enthusiasm and celebration, but also has respect and gentlemanly conduct.
Also, it has so much tension surrounding it and is so breathtakingly exciting; I find it hard to believe anyone could not be gripped by this outstanding event. Golf forever!
Sean,
England
My top 5:
1) Wimbledon
2) World Cup
3) French, Aussie and US Opens (Tennis)
4) Olympics (Winter and Summer)
5) European Cup

The Ryder Cup is undoubtedly a great sporting tournament but for sheer drama, give me a penalty shoot out in football's World Cup finals any day!!
James Hubbard, England
Best sporting event: Oldham Athletic v Bristol City.
Steve Fenton,

Definitely NFL. Any given Sunday anything can happen, isn't that sensational? NBA is thrilling. Despite all the scandals Major League Baseball is still appealing. And who does not like ice hockey (NHL)?
Maksood Mohiuddin, United States
I was thinking about this last Friday morning. The Ryder Cup was on the television and I was gripped. I started thinking about when I was a kid and what sporting memories stood out. I'm not particularly old.... but the memories that make the hairs stand up on my neck were as follows;
1. Everything Maradona did at the '86 World Cup (wow).
2. Christy O'Connor Jnr's 2-iron to within a foot of the 18th to win the Ryder (wow).
3. Stephen Roche taking the Tour de France in Paris (wow).
4. Cork's Hurling and Football Double in '89 in the All-Irelands.
5. Packie Bonnar's save against Romania in Italia '90.
6. David O'Leary's penalty to win in Italia '90.
7. Gordon Hamilton's winning try that didn't win the game against Australia at the Rugby World Cup '91.
8. The 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
9. Barry McGuigan's world titles.
10. John Fenton's ground shot in Hurling against Limerick in the Munster Championship... the greatest hurling goal ever scored.
11. Grobelaar's wobbly legs in the European Cup final penalty shoot-out.
I could go on and on...And OK, so I'm a little Ireland-biased but... in short, ALL Sports are the greatest sporting events in the world. We mightn't all agree, but to at least someone out there, each one is the best. Where would we be without sport?
Ronan Deane,
Canada (Irish)
What about the annual shinty/hurling match between Scotland and Ireland...sensational.
Keith Beveridge, Scotland
Don't be so silly. The World Cup and the Olympics are so much bigger than the Ryder Cup.
Paul, Newcastle
The Olympic Games are, without any doubt, the greatest sporting event in the world. Since there are so many events, however, it's hard to compare with some of the biggest championships in each major sport.
Here are my top five (not including the Olympics):
1. The World Cup (football).
2. The America's Cup (sailing).
3. IAAF World Championships (track and field).
4. World Hockey Championships (ice hockey).
5. The four Grand Slams (tennis - not really one event).
Jeff, Canada
I was so gripped by the marvellous battle for the Ryder Cup that I stayed up till 2am when McGinley's putt dropped, and could barely function at work on Monday as a result.
However, even though I've been lucky enough to attend championship golf, several FA Cup finals, test rugby and cricket matches, and a Formula One GP, nothing comes close to the Olympic Games.
I was there when Maurice Greene, Marion Jones, and Michael Johnson won their golds and it felt like being at the epicentre of the world at that moment. The tension and the thrill were indescribable.

Cycling...the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia are the two greatest and complex events. This is the team sport with individual victories, nationalities, history, legend, religion, friendships and betrayals, doping and soap opera.
And from the American perspective, not only is there a local hero, but the brilliant and poetic Phil Ligget and Paul Sherwin narration of the events via video and DVD!
Cycling is the space age sport that has traversed a century of development, roads, geography, war, socio-political trends, and ultimately is the greatest test of the individual day in and day out.
Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckxx, Miguel Indurain, Marco Pantane, Sean Yates, David Millar, Lance Armstrong, and so many more of the greats, their teams and domestiques. Stars and Watercarriers and Le Course En Tete will break your heart. One comes to understand the concept of love and suffering. Cycling.

Clearly it's impossible to compare the Ryder Cup and the Fifa World Cup. Watching the Ryder Cup this year was three of the best days of sport I have ever seen. Fascinating stuff!
The Fifa World Cup though is by far the most important event to me as a sports fan. They are both brilliant events but I say comparison is impossible as they are so different.
James Moore, UK
I want to personally congratulate the European Golf Team at the Ryder Cup. They have become a strong, in-depth team. Their fighting spirit and talent lead them to an exciting victory. To me, the Ryder Cup is the most exciting of all tournaments.
It requires self control, self discipline and stamina. The Euro team showed it had all three. We are extremely proud of all our golfers. Unfortunately their games were not as sharp as the Euro team - this time. We'll win again, and so will they! God Bless all of them for promoting world peace.
Flo Smith,
USA
Oh come on! I understand that Europe is on a high right now, but to say that this is the best sporting event in the world is going slightly overboard. The Fifa World Cup is head and shoulders above anything else.
Pasha Sidhu, Canada
The sense of drama unfolding over three days, and the tactics behind it all make the Ryder Cup something special - and it really separates the great sportsmen from those who are just good at the game of golf.
Tiger Woods was sadly shown up - not just in his play, as anyone can have a couple of bad rounds when the pressure is on, but in his lack of respect for even his own team, to the extent of wearing different outfits from everyone else on his side (confusing us by wearing the European colour scheme on day three!).
Only one thing beats this, and again it's the sense of a developing drama with tactics behind every move and new team partnerships being formed, and that is a LIONS TOUR.
Al, UK
Being an Australian, I have to say it is the AFL Premiership (Aussie Rules Premiership), and The Ashes at equal par.
Robert Langdon, Australia
What about a top five? From the point of view of my personal enjoyment:
1. World Cup
2. European Football Cup
3. The Ashes
4. Champions League
5. Premiership
But if I'm going to be a bit less biased towards football:
1. World Cup
2. Olympics
3. Super Bowl
Not sure after that actually...
Graham,
England
The World Cup is probably the biggest worldwide championship. But, here in North America...nothing tops hockey's Stanley Cup for history and excitement.
Brian Howson, USA
Football's World Cup is the best by a mile, even bigger than the Olympics.
Elvis, Namibia
This year's Ryder Cup was a marvellous spectacle, and had everything a great sporting event should encompass. Sportsmanship, tactics, tension, skill but above all team spirit.
However, purely for participation and audience levels, nothing will ever eclipse the Fifa World Cup on a team basis, or the Olympic Games on an individual level.
Sporting events are built around its traditions and heroes, and there were 26 people who certainly fit into that category from this weekend.
Keiran,
England
The best sporting event by far is the football World Cup! The Ryder Cup is nowhere near!
Mitesh Somaiya, UK
Best sporting event this weekend, why, World Superbikes - exiting and full of action. Both races should be shown live.
Dr Anthony Walsh, UK
I was a Liverpool fan at Cardiff when Owen scored two in five minutes to win the Cup against Arsenal. I was a European golf fan standing on the first tee on Friday morning when Azinger teed up and could hardly swing a club due to tension.
I was a European golf fan sat on the edge of my seat at my golf club yesterday afternoon, waiting for Fasth to hole the winning putt; step in the same man that could hardly swing a club on Friday morning. Azinger then managed somehow to hole out from the bunker on 18 to start the heart racing.
I watched the quiet man Phil Price, who had jumped all over Mickleson for 15 holes, produce a putt of quality to finish it off on 16; dramatic TV, I think so, it was the most scintillating afternoon I have ever spent.
Sorry Michael, you have been relegated. I was proud of our team and I was very proud to be a part of the carnival, the wave of solid support on the course on Friday, no one who watched that can ever say team golf is boring, it was fantastic! Well done Sam, well done the Belfry, you did Europe proud, well done Curtis Strange you are a man of honour and great words.
Steve Dawes, England
I love both golf and football, but my vote would have to go to the football World Cup. A fully inclusive sport with representation from all continents. However, what a fantastic three days that was. (Would we be saying that if America had won?)
Beedo, England
I think in the last five years, golf has become more popular then it ever was before, so the Ryder Cup would be in the top five. But, the Olympics has to be the top sporting event, along with the World Cup.
