Running for Parliament

GO THE EXTRA MILE

  • Sport Relief Saturday:
    10 July 2004
  • BBC One from 1900 BST

Running for Parliament took on a whole new meaning when the Sport Relief Mile came to Westminster.

More than 100 MPs, peers and leaders of major sports organisations took to St James's Park to do the mile and raise money for Sport Relief 2004.

The event provided a race with a twist as Sport Relief brought all the political parties together.

The Westminster Mile was staged to encourage the public to take part in the Sport Relief Mile on July 10.

Everyone around the UK, whatever their ability, is being encouraged to get together to do the Mile in 14 venues up and down the country.

In addition, a massive list of local Mile events are being organised by sports clubs, leisure centres and local authorities and other groups.

The locations and ideas are flooding in and range from over 50s in Calderdale wanting to do aerobics for a mile to a group of rugby fanatics passing a ball for the same distance.

You do not have to be a sporty person to get involved in the Mile, as the politicians, dressed in their Sport Relief Red Socks for the Westminster Mile, proved.

You can do the Mile in any way you want - backwards, walking, skipping or bouncing your way to the finish line on a space hopper.

Register online at www.sportrelief.com or by phone on 08712 44 44 11 (calls cost 10p/minute).

You can also register through any one of the 149 Fitness First health clubs all over the UK, and be there on July 10 to "Go The Extra Mile" and change the world by miles.
