Dragons sign Wales flanker Thomas

Wales flanker Gavin Thomas has joined the Dragons on a one-year deal following his release by the Scarlets.

Thomas, 31, will fill the gap left by the retirement of Richard Parks, the likely retirement of Colin Charvis and the departure of Jamie Ringer.

The 22-cap open-side was let go by the region in March after being injured for more than 26 weeks of the season.

"I have known Gavin for some time, I'm delighted to secure his services," said Dragons coach Paul Turner.

"He has a proven track record and with 22 Welsh caps has a wealth of experience which he can bring to the back row... [he] adds more strength to our squad."

The 6ft 1in 16st Thomas, who had been at the Scarlets since 2004 after stints with Bridgend, Bath and the Ospreys, won his last Wales cap in 2007.

He spent much of last season on the sidelines because of an Achilles tendon injury, but has now recovered.

"I am delighted to be joining the Dragons after being out for most of last season," said Thomas.

"It's great that the Dragons have shown confidence in me and I am looking forward to repaying them by performing on the pitch this season.

"There are already some excellent players in the back row and I aim to battle my way into gaining a starting place in the side and contributing to the overall development and success of the team."
