Samoan Tuilagi makes Sale switch

Anitelia Tuilagi

Sale Sharks have completed the signing of Samoan international Anitelia Tuilagi on a four-year contract.

Tuilagi, 22, who can play at centre or wing, made seven appearances for Leeds Carnegie last season after moving to the club from Leicester Tigers.

He has won 14 Test caps and was part of Samoa's 2007 World Cup squad.

Sharks coach Kingsley Jones told BBC Radio Manchester: "Andy is a raw talent and we feel he can bring power to the backs and this can really go forward."

Tuilagi is one of a number of brothers to have made the grade, and Jones knows Tuilagi well through his older brother Fereti.

He said: "Freddie [Fereti] is a friend of mine and he looks after Andy [Anitelia] and Alex."

Tuilagi left Leeds Carnegie in June after having the final year of his contract cancelled with immediate effect.

Jones firmly believes she can be a success at Edgeley Park this season.

He said: "He's not the finished article but he certainly brings something to us and we need to develop his potential - we're all really excited about having him here."

Sale director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre also expects great things from the Samoan international.

"Andy is a great acquisition for the club. He's young, strong and has played at international level."

Meanwhile Argentina international Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe has been named captain for the 2008/09 season while Sebastian Chabal and Dean Schofield have been named as his vice-captains.
