Leeds success crucial - Dallaglio

Lawrence Dallaglio (r) & Neil Back

Ex-England captain Lawrence Dallaglio believes it is important Leeds Carnegie thrive in the Premiership for the future of rugby union in the region.

Leeds claimed their first league win of the season over Dallaglio's former side Wasps at the weekend.

"Being in rugby league heartland, it's important we have successful clubs flying the flag for union there," Dallaglio told BBC Radio Leeds.

"We need a strong geographical mix to develop the game further."

England's World Cup-winning number eight sharpened his rugby skills during his school days at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

"I learnt to play rugby in Yorkshire and loved my time there, although I didn't develop the posh accent my parents were looking for after paying all that money for it," joked Dallaglio.

"I am obviously gutted as a loyal Wasps board member and fan that it happened to be at Wasps"

"Leeds are doing great and you have Newcastle and Sale in the north too and it's great to have that mix.

"This is a sport to be played by everyone up and down the country, so long may [having northern teams] continue.

"I have to say a big congratulations to Leeds for taking the mighty scalp of Wasps at the weekend. It's great for [head coach] Neil Back and for Leeds to get their first Premiership win.

"I am obviously gutted as a loyal Wasps board member and fan that it happened to be at Wasps.

"But full credit to them and I wish them all the very best luck for the rest of the season."
