A shadow Australia side warmed up for Saturday's Test against England with a comfortable win over Gloucester.

Quade Cooper kicked the tourists ahead with an early penalty before converting a fine Ryan Cross try.

Freddie Burns replied for Gloucester, only for Tyrone Smith's converted score to make it 17-5 at the break.

Australia added three more tries in the second half through wing Drew Mitchell (two) and Cooper, who kicked two more conversions to finish with 16 points.

The match was played in front of a full house at Kingsholm and Burns, who is still only 19, clearly relished the try-scoring moment, celebrating with a swallow-like dive after finishing off a move started by Carlos Spencer's clever cross-kick.

"I wouldn't have believed I would have scored against Australia this year," he told BBC Gloucestershire.

"I just went with the flow. The Shed was full and there were 6,500 people going mental."

Burns added: "I think we played most of the rugby but you can't give these boys a sniff. They'll punish you and that's what they did. If a few more passes had stuck we could have had a couple more tries but it was still a good performance."

Australia coach Robbie Deans felt it was a worthwhile exercise for his squad with Saturday's international at Twickenham looming.

"When you are going from Test match to Test match you don't get development time," he said.

"Some of these guys will only play two games on tour and they wanted to make the most of it. From our perspective it was a good experience for them.

"It was great to play in a purpose-built rugby stadium. We don't do enough of that at home. The crowd enjoyed it and got into it and we'd love to do it again some time."
