Ward-Smith offered Cup lifeline
England coach Brian Ashton has left the door open for Bristol's Dan Ward-Smith to play a role in the World Cup despite releasing him from the squad.
The number eight suffered a major knee injury in January but had recovered enough to train with the squad.
"Dan's not ready to compete at this level and you don't want to use a World Cup warm-up game as rehab," he said.
"He'll join Bristol's pre-season and should we need him as World Cup cover he'll have some games under his belt."
