Joe Rokocoko scored his first Test try for almost two years as New Zealand laboured to a 27-6 victory over Italy in Christchurch.
Isaac Ross and George Whitelock both went over for their first international tries in chilly but perfect conditions.
Luke McAlister converted all three scores and added two penalties, while Italy full-back Luke McLean landed two penalties for the Azzurri.
New Zealand open their Tri-Nations campaign against Australia on 18 July.
