Edinburgh (0) 9

Ulster edged past Edinburgh to move off the bottom of the Magners League with their first league win of the campaign.

They led 7-0 at half-time thanks to David Pollock's try which was converted by Clinton Schifcofske.

The visitors hit back after the break with two David Blair penalties before Schifcofske made it 13-6 with a brace of penalties.

Phil Godman set up a tense finish with a 61st minute penalty but Ulster held on for a vital victory.

Ulster coach Matt Williams made eight changes for the Ravenhill game in response to last week's 43-0 hammering by the Ospreys.

Edinburgh dominated possession in the opening stages but failed to penetrate a firm Ulster defence.

Schifcofske has struggled since his arrival at Ravenhill in the summer and the wing failed to convert a penalty after 20 minutes.

However, Ulster were now posing a threat and Pollock went over six minutes later after good work from Bryn Cunningham.

Schifcofske added the conversion but he failed with another penalty opportunity just before the break.

The visitors made an impressive start to the second half with Blair firing over a penalty on 43 minutes after a mistake by Ryan Caldwell.

It was 7-6 just two minutes later when Blair was again accurate from a penalty.

Ulster were looking nervous but they re-established a four-point advantage with Schifcofske's penalty after 52 minutes.

Schifcofske wasted another penalty before stretching Ulster's lead with a 62nd minute strike.

Niall O'Connor could have put Ulster 10 points clear but the fly-half failed to find the target from a penalty.

Godman slotted over with nine minutes left but Ulster kept Edinburgh out to register an invaluable four points.
