Sailor calls time on rugby career

Wendell Sailor

Former Australia dual-code star Wendell Sailor has announced his retirement at the age of 35.

The winger won the 2000 Rugby League World Cup before switching to union in 2002, going on to play in the final of the 2003 World Cup.

His union career ended in disgrace when he tested positive for cocaine in 2006, but he returned to league with St George Illawarra Dragons in May 2008.

"I've had my time and am now ready to step aside," he said.

"Even though this is a major decision in anyone's life, it's not one that I had to think too much about.

"I came back to rugby league and achieved what I wanted and needed to with a fantastic club in the Dragons. It's time to let the great young players here have their turn.

"My family and I are ready for this next phase in our lives."

Sailor's 16-year career began with Brisbane Broncos in the National Rugby League and his prolific tryscoring record persuaded Australia's rugby union bosses to fund a big-money switch to the rival code.

He played for Queensland Reds and established himself in the Australia Test side that fell agonisingly short of winning the 2003 World Cup.

A two-year ban for cocaine use looked to have ended his career in 2006, but Sailor made a successful comeback in league with the Dragons and he helped them win the 2009 Minor Premiership.

Sailor will stay with the Dragons in a marketing role, as well as working in the media.
