Castleford held off Salford's attempted fightback to keep their Super League play-off hopes on track.

The Tigers set up the win with two converted tries in the final nine minutes of the first half from Brett Ferres and Michael Shenton.

Dean McGilvray gave the home side hope on 54 minutes, but Kirk Netherton responded five minutes later to keep the visitors in the driving seat.

Stefan Ratchford's late try was merely a consolation score for Salford.

Castleford coach Terry Matterson:

"I thought it was a pretty professional performance from our guys in really tough conditions against a very committed Salford side.

"We had control for the vast majority of the game. I'm very pleased to come here and get a win considering the way they have been going.

"I thought it was a real good team performance and I don't think anybody really stood out. We did really well considering the conditions and everyone contributed."

Salford coach Shaun McRae:

"I thought we played okay but we turned over too much ball. I thought we defended particularly well.

"We didn't handle a couple of their kicks in the first half but I might actually give more credit to Cas than lack of effort from our guys.

"Cas were better than us, strong defensively and they just shaded us. They deserved to win the match."
