Injured Gidley out of World Cup
Australia utility man Kurt Gidley has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after injuring his knee during Sunday's 30-6 win over New Zealand.
Scans revealed the 26-year-old had knocked a piece of cartilage off the joint of his left kneecap.
"It's a bitterly disappointing way to end the season, especially off the back of our strong performance against the Kiwis," Gidley said.
"I'm devastated I won't be able to take any further part in the tournament."
The injury means Gidley will play no part in the World Cup favourites' next match, against England on Sunday.
He will, however, remain with the squad for the game before returning to his club, Newcastle Knights, to undergo surgery.
