Video referee decision delayed

Super League clubs are to wait a year before making a decision on whether to use video referees at all matches, rather than just televised ones.

The League used one as an experiment at last month's non-televised Hull derby.

"It helped with a number of key decisions," said Rugby Football League spokesman Stuart Cummings.

"As a result, we have explored the introduction of video referees at all games in future, a move which would cost a six-figure sum each year."

Rugby league was one of the first sports to use new technology but the video referee has divided opinion among coaches since it was introduced for matches televised by Sky Sports in 1996.

"At this time it was agreed that they will look at the proposal again next year, giving the RFL further opportunity to trial the technology in different conditions," added Cummings.

As a result, only live games covered by Sky Sports, the BBC and Canal+ in France will have a video referee next season, in addition to those games chosen to take part in further trials.
