Vonn crash delays world title win

Lindsey Vonn must wait until at least next week before she can retain her World Cup overall title after crashing in the slalom at Ofterschwang, Germany.

The American had clocked the fastest time in the morning leg but slid out of contention close to the finishing line.

She only needed to finish in front of Maria Riesch, her nearest World Cup rival, to win her second overall title.

The race was won by Sandrine Aubert, who gave the French their first victory in a World Cup slalom for seven years.

"I'm delighted and surprised. I cannot think of a better way to end the season," said Aubert, who won in a combined time of one minute and 46.28 seconds.

"This is a consolation for the world championships in Val d'Isere when I crashed as a medal was within reach."
