Hosp wins but Alcott misses out

Chemmy Alcott Britain's Chemmy Alcott missed out on her first-ever podium finish when she had a poor second run in the World Cup giant slalom in Kranjska Gora.

She was third after the first run but made a series of errors in the second run in Slovenia to finish 16th.

Austria's Nicole Hosp won the race in a combined time of two minutes 09.85 second with Italy's Nicole Guis second and Finland's Tanja Poutiainen third.

It was Hosp's first win in giant slalom for almost a year.

Alcott equalled her best ever giant slalom result, which was 16th in Maribor, Slovenia, three years ago.

Her best World Cup result remains the seventh place in the super-combined in Reiteralm in Austria in December.

"I've fought very hard this season and had a lot of second places, so I'm very happy about this race"

The 24-year-old's form has been impressive and the Kransjka Gora showing was her seventh top 25 result of the season.

She said after the first run: "I can't believe that I was skiing so fast.

"My best result is a seventh in combined so can you imagine what it will be like if I stay on the podium?

"What I'm going to do right now is get my camera and take a picture of my name up on the giant scoreboard."

The hard-packed icy piste had a number of top-name casualties in the first run, including overall World Cup leader Marlies Schild and fellow Austrian Kathrin Zettel, who had led the giant slalom standings after wins in the first two races.

Hosp said she was amazed she had stayed on her feet to record the win.

"I've fought very hard this season and had a lot of second places, so I'm very happy about this race," she said.
