Ban puts Dolidovich out of Games

The 2006 Winter Olympics take place in Turin Belarussian cross-country skier Sergei Dolidovich will miss the remainder of the Winter Olympics after getting a second ban for high haemoglobin levels.

Dolidovich was banned for five days last week and had his ban extended for another five days on Tuesday after his levels were found to be still too high.

He was scheduled to take part in the men's team sprint event on Tuesday.

Dolidovich was one of 12 athletes to have had high haemoglobin values but four were cleared on Monday.

Haemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells which carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

The abnormally high levels of haemoglobin in the athletes blood could occur naturally or be produced by using blood-boosting drugs such as EPO.
