Washington have agreed a new long-term deal with offensive tackle Chris Samuels which will give him a reported signing bonus of $16m.
According to The Washington Times, the bonus on the contract agreed just before Wednesday's free agency deadline, will be the largest in franchise history.
Samuels, who was the third overall pick in the 2000 draft, has started in all 76 games in which he has appeared over five seasons.
Widely considered one of the best offensive lineman in the NFL, he played in the Pro Bowl in both 2001 and 2002.
The 27-year-old was in the final year of his initial NFL contract and re-signing him means the Redskins will likely save nearly $5m in salary cap space.
Elsewhere, Baltimore landed wide Derrick Mason, whose 96 catches for Tennessee last season led all NFL wide receivers.
Mason, 31, was one of six Titans cut last month in a salary cap purge. He will join a team whose leading receiver had just 35 catches a year ago.
Jacksonville have re-signed franchise player Donovin Darius to a one-year tender contract. Darius received the team's franchise tag for the third straight season.
Tampa Bay have released quarterback Brad Johnson and wide receiver Joe Jurevicius, two stars of their run to the XXXVII Super Bowl title.
Also cut by the Bucs were cornerback Mario Edwards and linebacker Ian Gold.
They joined a number of other veterans looking for new clubs or contemplating retirement as teams worked to get under the NFL's $85.5m salary cap.
Also released was Troy Brown, who played both offense and defence last season for Super Bowl champions New England.
The 33-year-old, who was both a wide receiver and return man for New England, became the team's third cornerback last season after injuries decimated the secondary.
He became a free agent when the Patriots declined to pick up the option in his current contract.
Leaving the Oakland Raiders are guard Frank Middleton, safety Ray Buchanan and tight end Roland Williams.
Green Bay have released left guard Mike Wahle whose $11.3m cap number was second on the team only to quarterback Brett Favre's.
Dallas released three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Dexter Coakley, who was due a $500,000 roster bonus if he was still on the team on 2 March.
Buffalo dispensed with the services of defensive tackle Pat Williams, offensive lineman Marcus Price, back-up safety Izell Reese and third-string tight end Ryan Neufeld.
