Fridge backing Wembley's NFL bid

William Perry at the new Wembley Stadium NFL giant William Perry is backing a bid to bring NFL action to London at the new Wembley Stadium in 2006.

Perry, nicknamed 'The Fridge' because of his size, visited the development as discussions began about it staging a regular season NFL game.

The ex-Chicago Bears star, a Super Bowl winner in 1986, said: "From what I have seen of the new stadium it is going to be one of the greatest in the world.

"NFL players would love to be part of a major event in a venue like this."

If the NFL agrees to stage a game in London, it would be the first regular-season contest to be played outside of the Americas.

San Francisco and Arizona are set to meet on 2 October in Mexico City.

Defensive lineman Perry became a 23-stone cult hero when Bears coach Mike Ditka used him with great success in short-yardage offensive situations.

He scored a touchdown in Chicago's win 46-10 win over New England in Super Bowl XX.

Perry also played for Philadelphia in a nine-year NFL career, retiring in 1995, and played with the now-defunct London Monarchs in 1996.

He played at the old Wembley Stadium for the Bears in an exhibition game following their Super Bowl win.
