British hopes end at World Open

Madeline Perry is through to the quarter-final stages Reaching the semi-finals of the Women's World Open proved to be a step too far for Britain's three quarter-finalists.

Home favourite and eighth seed Madeline Perry lost 9-5 10-8 9-5 in Belfast to US 14th seed Natalie Grainger.

Aussie fourth seed Natalie Grinham ended the hopes of English seventh seed Tania Bailey, beating her 9-5 10-8 9-5.

Her third-seeded sister Rachael Grinham, saw off Bailey's compatriot Laura-Jane Lengthorn, the 11th seed, 9-2 9-3 9-6 in 34 minutes.

Top seed and defending champion Nicol David of Malaysia was made to work hard by Omneya Abdel Kawy before beating the Egyptian ninth seed 10-8 9-2 9-4.

Perry said after her defeat by Grainger. "I'm gutted. I really thought I could win ? it was a brilliant opportunity for me to get into a world semi-final.

"But she just played too well for me. She was absolutely flying. When she's playing well she's pretty intimidating.

"But to have the opportunity to play the World Open in your own country is an experience I'll never forget."

In the semi-finals, David will face Rachel Grinham, while Natalie Grinham takes on Grainger.

David said: "It'll be a big match tomorrow with Rachael - we've played each other so many times.

"I'll have to get my game on top notch and keep her out of her comfort zone."
