England capture world team title

World number two James Willstrop came from behind to beat world champion Amr Shabana 4-9 9-6 9-3 9-1 in a gruelling opening match in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Former world number one Peter Nicol gave England an unassailable lead with a 9-0 9-2 9-1 win over Mohammad Abbas.

"This is my way of repaying England for all their support," said the former Scot, who changed nationality in 2001.

"I really wanted this victory badly and am really pleased to have done it.

"It is a fantastic win and something to cherish. It will further help lift the sport back home," he added.

World number one Thierry Lincou thrashed Jonathon Power 9-4 9-2 9-2 to help France secure third place with a 2-1 win over Canada.

Defending champions Australia, beaten by Canada in the quarter-finals, finished fifth by defeating Malaysia 2-0.

Hosts Pakistan, winners on six occasions, downed Wales 2-1 to win the play-off for seventh place.
