Cash boost for British Olympians

London 2012 Olympics logo UK Sport has awarded an extra £65.3m to Olympic and Paralympic events as a first step ahead of London 2012.

Summer Olympic sports are to receive an extra £58.8m up to 2008 and summer Paralympic sports will get £6.5m.

It means all Olympic sports other than football and tennis will receive at least £465,000 a year.

UK Sport will "review progress" after the 2008 Beijing Olympics before deciding how funds will be allocated in the four years up to 2012.

The money is part of the extra £300m that Chancellor Gordon Brown promised British sport in the run-up to London 2012 in his March Budget.

Sue Campbell, the chair of UK Sport, said: "We have started a six-year process that will not just deliver medals in 2012 but help transform the high-performance system in this country.

"Allocating funding across so many sports is never easy but a decision eventually has to be made about the relative merits of competing demands.

"It is for the sports and athletes now to prove by their performances in the next three years that this investment is justified and indeed should be increased as they build up to London 2012."

Feature: What difference will the funding make?

A total of £17m will be invested in 2006/7, £23.2m in 2007/8 and £25.1m in 2008/9.

The remainder of the government funding will be phased in over the three years leading up to the 2012 Games, subject to all 27 sports meeting designated performance targets.

"There is a very clear roll-out planned," said UK Sport Performance Consultant Peter Keen. "We are not just spending it all up front.

"There will be expansion of budgets with respect to expansion of performance."

Olympic Minister Tessa Jowell welcomed the news.

"UK Sport have got out of the blocks quickly and shown just how serious we all are in our determination to give the potential medallists of 2012 the maximum possible backing for their ambitions."
