Pittsburgh take Stanley Cup glory

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh beat Detroit Red Wings 2-1 to claim the NHL's Stanley Cup for the third time by earning a 4-3 series win.

Maxime Talbot scored twice before Jonathan Ericsson reduced the deficit and netminder Marc-Andre Fleury denied the Wings' Nicklas Lidstrom late on.

It means the Penguins gained revenge by taking the cup on enemy ice, just as Detroit did in Pittsburgh last season.

They become the first team to win the title a year after losing in the finals since Edmonton did so 25 years ago.

Stopper Fleury produced a superb performance to erase the memory of a 5-0 loss in game five at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena that had left Pittsburgh on the verge of elimination.

But Pittsburgh returned home and notched a 2-1 victory on Tuesday to force the series into a deciding game.

"I knew there wasn't much time left," Fleury said regarding his last-ditch save. "The rebound was wide. I just decided to get my body out there and it hit me in the ribs so it was good."

The Penguins became only the third team in NHL finals history to win a seventh game on the road to lift the title, joining Montreal (1971) and Toronto (1945) as they secured a 4-3 series triumph.

And match-winner Talbot said: "I can't remember how I scored, and I don't care how I scored but I can't believe that we won the Stanley Cup."

Evgeni Malkin, who led the play-offs with 36 points and assisted on Talbot's first goal of the night, earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the post-season.

Malkin, who was also the NHL's leading scorer in the regular season, was key as Pittsburgh opened the scoring at 1:13 of the second period.

He pressured Detroit's Brad Stuart into making a bad pass, and Talbot collected the puck and finished well.

Talbot doubled Pittsburgh's advantage midway through the period, breaking in on a two-on-one then firing in a slap shot that flew by Osgood's glove into the top corner.

But the Red Wings would not surrender their crown without a fight, rookie Ericsson blasting a shot from the point past Fleury with just over six minutes to set up a dramatic finish.
