Flyers finally find winning form

NHL

Philadelphia staved off an NHL Eastern Conference finals sweep by Pittsburgh with a 4-2 ice home win in game four.

Three first-period goals from Joffrey Lupul, Danny Briere and Jeff Carterput put the Flyers in charge, but the Penguins fought back.

Jordan Staal found the net twice in the third period to make it 3-2, but Lupul scored an empty-netter with 32.3 seconds left to clinch victory.

Game five of the best-of-seven series is in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Flyers goalie Martin Biron, who made 36 saves, said: "We played an excellent first period and that made the difference.

"It gave us a bit of a cushion the rest of the game."

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said his team need to play smart and avoid bad penalties.

"We have to play to our strengths," he said. "That's our skating, our speed and our skill, and being physical in a disciplined way."

Biron added that the Flyers would try to carry the same spirit into Sunday's game.

"It's going to be tough, but any team can win. Today we decided to let loose and play and have fun and we're going to try and do that on Sunday."
