'Henry' extends winning sequence

Johnny Murtagh rides Henrythenavigator to victory at Goodwood

Henrythenavigator held off a strong finish from Raven's Pass to win his fourth consecutive Group One race in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

The 4-11 favourite, the shortest-price horse in the race's history, gave Aidan O'Brien his third victory in the race and 16th Group One success this year.

Jockey Johnny Murtagh said his mount had plenty in hand despite winning by just a head from 4-1 shot Raven's Pass.

"When he hit the line, he was still full of running," Murtagh said.

"The good ones have everything. They couldn't go fast enough for him. But I had a nice position and when he quickened up he quickened really well - I'd say the time for the last two furlongs would have been exceptional.

"He is a great horse, he won very easily at the line and he won't be beaten this year."

What do you make of Henry's victory?
Henrythenavigator completed the English/Irish 2000 Guineas double earlier this season before winning the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on his last outing.

Ballydoyle stablemate Windsor Palace paced the field in the early stages at Goodwood, but not quickly enough for O'Brien.

"I was very worried with two furlongs to go," he said. "Obviously (jockey) David (McCabe) did his best on Windsor Palace but he was flat out all the way."

But "Henry" quickened impressively over a furlong out to take a couple of lengths out of his rivals.

Raven's Pass began to reel him in late on but chased him home for the third time this season having finished fourth at Newmarket and second at Royal Ascot.

Trainer John Gosden said: "He is a tough horse to give a length-and-a-half start to but we are thrilled with our horse.

"Thank God we turned up otherwise he would have won by four lengths!"
