Mansony claims Leopardstown win

Mansony Mansony held off a late challenge from Nickname to win the grade one Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown.

Davy Russell's mount went off as 2-1 joint favourite with Nickname, who left his challenge too late, while Schindler's Hunt (4-1) was third.

14-1 chance Newbay Prop edged out Sound Witness (25-1) to win the Paddy Power Handicap Chase with No Full in third.

Ross Geraghty only got the ride on Newbay Prop on Wednesday after Robbie Colgan had suffered a broken jaw.

Colgan sustained the injury after falling at Down Royal on Wednesday.

Geraghty steered Newbay Prop home despite suffering from a dose of the flu.

Newbay Prop had produced a poor run on his last outing at Fairyhouse but he was in touch throughout in Thursday's race and got up in the final stride to edge out long-time leader Sound Witness.

The race appeared to have boiled down to a straight fight between the front-running Sound Witness and No Full but Newbay Prop stayed on stoutly to win by a head.

After his win in the Paddy Power Chase, Mansony was cut to 16-1 from 20s for the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with Nickname out to 16-1 from 14s.

"Arthur (Moore) told me to send him off early enough and it worked out well," said Mansony's jockey Davy Russell.

Arthur Moore's eight-year-old was no match for The Listener last time over two-and-a-half miles but dropped back to the minimum distance and showed his class.

Nickname, running on ground that was quicker than ideal, was outpaced down the back straight and put in some sticky jumps on his first outing since March.

But Martin Brassil's charge stayed on dourly after the last and only went down by a length.
