Breeders' Cup expanded for 2007

Ouija Board and Frankie Dettori win the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf race This year's Breeders' Cup in the United States has been expanded to include 11 races over two days.

The event, at Monmouth Park in New Jersey on 26 and 27 October, will have US$23m in prize money.

The new races on 26 October, all worth $1m, are the Dirt Mile and the Filly & Mare Sprint for three-year-olds and up, and the Juvenile Turf.

There will be three other stakes races on the card, each with a prize fund of $250,000.

The eight races on Breeders' Cup Saturday are the Breeders' Cup Classic, which is worth $5m, as well as the Turf, Juvenile Fillies, Juvenile, Filly & Mare Turf, Mile, Sprint and Distaff.

The additional racing was approved by the board of the Breeders' Cup last week and must now be cleared by state regulators.

"Today's market place demands change, innovation and the willingness to take chances," said Breeders' Cup president Greg Avioli.

"The Board has embraced this and is giving us the freedom and responsibility to take the event to the next level."
