Maher secures Speed Derby triumph
Ben Maher produced a grandstand finish on Mercurius to win the Bunn Leisure Speed Derby at Hickstead.
The 23-year-old was the last of 31 starters but Mercurius pipped Ireland's Shane Breen on Mullaghdrin Gold Rain.
The victory was another success for Maher, who won the Speed Derby and Derby at last year's meeting, and he will eye another double when he rides Alfredo tomorrow.
Ellen Whitaker was third on her 2005 runner-up Henri de Herne.
