Paralympic duo claim world bests

Paralympic swimmer Sam Hynd

Paralympic gold medallists Sam Hynd and Heather Frederiksen were back in record-breaking form at the National Short Course Swimming Championships.

Hynd, who won a gold and a bronze in Beijing, broke three world and five European records in Sheffield.

Frederiksen, who won four medals in total in Beijing, beat four world and six European marks over the weekend.

"I was hoping to break a couple of the records but certainly not as many as I did," she said afterwards.

Hynd's new world marks came in the S8 50m breaststroke, 400m freestyle and 4x25m medley, while he also broke the European 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley marks.

Frederiksen also had a busy weekend swimming in the S8 category with new world marks in the 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke and six European records.

She also set two further world and European records as part of the North West relay team in the event, organised by Disability Sport Events.

Frederiksen was pleased to get back in the pool and take part in her first event since coming back from China.

"It felt good being back to reality, starting the new four-year cycle and having a really good promising starting point again," she said.

"My fitness levels are pretty average at the moment so everything I have achieved this weekend is down to sheer hard work since coming home from Beijing and a good solid background from leading into the Games."

There were also world records for Stephanie Millward (S9), Matt Walker (S7) and Jane Stidever (S4) during the meet.
