Mitton goes for table tennis gold

Cathy Mitton

York table tennis player Cathy Mitton will head to this year's Paralympics in Beijing hoping to improve on her previous performances.

The 51-year-old won bronze in the individual event in both 2000 and 2004 and told BBC Radio York that this time she wants to do better.

"I would like a different colour, I must admit," she said. "It is getting a bit repetitive, isn't it?"

The table tennis event takes place from 7 to 16 September at Peking University.

Mitton says the experience of being at previous games in Sydney and Athens should help her.

However, she feels that with China being the home of table tennis, these Paralympics will be like nothing else.

"I've just got to knuckle down and train really hard and just get myself the best prepared that I can be"

"You've got an idea of what its going to happen and how," she said. "But I think there's going to be a lot more interest in table tennis over there."

Cathy is now aiming to start training again after suffering with an injury, but already being selected for Great Britain has taken pressure off.

She added: "I don't have to prove myself in the next few weeks so, I've just got to knuckle down and train really hard and just get myself the best prepared that I can be."
