Pegram wins top DSE sports honour

Jack Pegram London 2012 hopeful Jack Pegram beat a host of talented youngsters to take the Rising Star prize at the Nationwide DSE (Disability Sport Events) Awards.

The 16-year-old from Watford, who plays table tennis and wheelchair football, won the award and £6,000.

He won gold medals at the UK School Games, the National Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville and at the DSE National Table Tennis Championships.

He is currently on the sport's talent development squad.

The awards in Manchester saw more than 30 individuals from across the country recognised for their sporting and volunteer achievements with bursaries totalling £22,300.

Wheelchair athlete Mickey Bushell won the national sportsperson prize as well as the West Midlands regional award.

In 2007 he recovered from illness to win the T53 100 and 200m events at the DSE British Open in Manchester and was also the under-20 champion over 100, 200, 400 and 1500m.

In addition, the 17-year-old from Telford set a number of personal bests on the road.

The £1,500 prize money (£500 for the regional and £1,000 for the national prize) will help fund his travel costs and allow him to train more for the future.
