Pistorius sprints to new record

South African amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius has become the first double amputee to run below 11 seconds for the 100m.

Pistorius, who will compete at next month's Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, clocked 10.91 seconds at the SA Disabled Championships.

It beat his American rival Marlon Shirley's time of 11.08 seconds set in France in 2002.

The 20-year-old also improved his own world 200m and 400m records at the event in Johannesburg.

In the 200m, he ran 21.6 seconds to break the record of 21.66 he set at last year's IPC World Championships in Assen, Holland.

He then went on to claim victory in the 400m in 49.16 seconds, beating his previous world best of 49.42 seconds before winning a fourth gold medal as part of the 4x100m relay team.

Last month Pistorius finished second in the 400m at the South African able-bodied championships in 46.56 seconds.

He hopes to compete over the distance at next year's Beijing Olympics but may be stopped from competing by the sport's governing body, the IAAF, who want to introduce a rule banning the use of any artificial means of running.
