Taylor savours 14th world title

Phil Taylor

Stoke-on-Trent's Phil Taylor has said winning his 14th world darts championship ranks alongside anything else he has ever achieved.

The world number one, 48, beat Raymond van Barneveld 7-1 in Sunday's Professional Darts Corporation final at the Alexandra Palace in London.

"This ranks alongside anything I've ever achieved," said Taylor.

"They all said I was finished but now who's laughing? I'm here as world champion for the 14th time."

Taylor, who has now won 12 PDC titles and two British Darts Organisation championships, claimed his first world title since 2006 with a three-dart average of 110.94 - the highest ever in a major final.

"I've played well over the years and had some great performances but the standard is better now," he added.

"This will break Barney's heart but he will go back to Holland and practice to put it right"

"You've got no choice now but to throw 100-plus averages."

The win over van Barneveld gave Taylor some revenge for his defeat to the Dutchman in the 2006 World Championship final.

"This will break Barney's heart but he will go back to Holland and practice to put it right," said Taylor.

World number two Barneveld, a five-time world champion himself, was quick to praise Taylor.

"He was absolutely brilliant, I just don't know what to do to beat this man.

"He is the greatest ever and I never took the opportunities he gave me, but I will be back."
