Champion Klaasen upset by Stompe

  • Live coverage from Lakeside on BBC TV and BBC Interactive from 6-14 January

Jelle Klaasen Jelle Klaasen saw his title defence fail at the first hurdle when he was upset 3-0 by Co Stompe at the Lakeside World Darts Championships.

The 22-year-old was a surprise winner last year but has been out of form and could not match his fellow Dutchman.

Stompe, who had not won at Lakeside for four years, now meets top seed Martin Adams in Tuesday's second round.

Adams also enjoyed a comfortable first test on Lakeside, beating former semi-finalist Tony O'Shea 3-0.

Stompe said after his win: "I had lost four first-round matches on the trot and really wanted to get through this one.

"After I won the first set I saw Jelle struggling and getting down and just told myself to finish him off."

Davy Richardson defied the pain from two broken ribs to also claim his first win in six attempts.

He beat ninth seed Vincent van der Voort 3-1, three days after falling in his bedroom whilst undressing.

"Tony (O'Shea) is a tough hombre and there's no way I expected to win 3-0"
    Martin Adams

The upset victory was a deserved reward for the man who has come through qualifying a record six times.

After his match, the 44-year-old Richardson said: "I can't believe I've got rid of my first-round bogey. I was getting a few twinges from my ribs and had to play through the pain.

"My first thoughts on Wednesday were that I would never be able to play. But I went to hospital, was given some painkillers and got sorted out.

"When I got back from the hospital the first thing I did was pick up my darts and have a throw.

"It was going through my mind that Bobby George played with a broken back in the 1994 final, and when Bobby gave me a few words of advice this morning I thought 'if he can do it, so can I'."

Richardson will next meet 2000 champion Ted Hankey, who avoided an upset against Mario Robbe by winning 3-0.

"It means an awful lot to me to win that match because I've had a bad year and a lot of things have gone wrong - it's been a nightmare," said the 38-year-old eighth seed.

Two-time runner-up Mervyn King became the third seed to advance without dropping a set as he ended the challenge of Hampshire qualifier Paul Gibbs.

But King was flattered by the scoreline and said: "I take my hat off to Paul - he put up a diamond performance."
